Connecticut Final Paycheck Law

✓ Verified against official sources · August 31, 2026 Conn. Gen. Stat. §§ 31-71c, 31-72
The short answer: Connecticut employers must pay a fired employee in full by the next business day after the discharge; an employee who quits is paid on the next regular payday.
If fired
By the next business day after discharge
If they quit
Next regular payday
Unused PTO
Per written policy (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 31-74a)
Penalty for non-compliance: A civil action for unpaid wages can recover twice the full amount owed plus costs and attorney's fees (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 31-72).

Connecticut splits its deadlines sharply. Under Conn. Gen. Stat. § 31-71c, an employee who voluntarily leaves is paid in full no later than the next regular payday; an employee who is discharged must be paid in full no later than the business day next succeeding the discharge.

Enforcement runs through § 31-72: an employee (or the Labor Commissioner on their behalf) can recover twice the full amount of unpaid wages in a civil action, plus costs and reasonable attorney's fees. Vacation payout at separation follows the employer's policy; § 31-74a addresses how vacation pay is computed when a policy provides it.

For employersNext business day is one of the fastest deadlines in the country — coordinate payroll before the termination meeting, because double damages under § 31-72 attach to what you miss.
For employeesIf you were fired, your full wages are due by the next business day. Unpaid wages can be pursued for double the amount plus fees under § 31-72.
